In Memory of Elsie by Brian Riffel

When I started Kindergarten, my older sister introduced me to a yard duty.  She said if you ever have any problems go talk with Elsie.  It didn't take long till I was Elsie's side kick (or as my parents would say "Shadow").  She would keep me out of trouble and keep me from catching all the girls I could chase after.  Soon we would spend recess talking about airplanes.  She would tell me about all the RC airplanes her husband would crash, and how much time he would spend building them.  We had so much fun.

In 1st grade Elsie and I were talking and I told her I had a big new job.  I was mowing lawns with my Dads business.  Some time later we started mowing their lawn as Dee was recovering from heart surgery.  I was mowing the front lawn and I looked in to the garage and saw a yellow tail from one of Dee's planes.  I stopped the mower and walked over to make sure I wasn't dreaming.  When we finished mowing, Elsie took me upstairs to look at all of Dee's projects.  I told my dad I was going to be a model pilot.

Soon all I could talk about was RC Planes.  Elsie would talk about the Giant Scale Races at the Madera airport.  We would talk about our favorite race planes.  In 2nd grade I purchased and flew my first plane.  Soon Dee and Elsie where taking me to different club events.  It was inspiring to see this short warm hearted woman organize and run the food stand at the t-34 races, and float flies.  It was hard the last couple of years seeing Elsie slow down with age.  The warmth of her heart never changed.

Elsie Edna Neiderheiser passed away December 17, 2008.  At the age of 83.

I am very thankful for having her in my life.  If it wasn't for her I wouldn't be here today.  The hobby she gave me kept me out of trouble through my teen years.  Thank you.  Someone who always supported me.  Someone who loved me and my family.  Someone who hugs you because you are having a good day, bad day, or because you just want to.

God Bless
Brian
